VOCATIONS AWARENESS WEEK
The special week for prayer for good and holy vocations begins on Sunday 9 September.

DRINK PLENTY OF WATER
I've heard it. I've read it. As long as I have been running, it's always been the same message - 'Drink plenty of water'. All along most race courses are water stations and most runners slow down to drink a cup of cool water. Keeping your water level up is critical when you run. If you get slightly dehydrated, you will not run well. If you get moderately dehydrated, you will become disoriented. If you get seriously dehydrated, you can die. It's serious business. The first year I ran was 1991 and I was inexperienced - also younger, slimmer, stupider, et cetera. I passed water stop after water stop, occasionally drinking a swallow or two. I felt good, and I wasn't going to waste precious seconds drinking water, even though it was a hot, humid day. This was a big mistake. As I neared the final mile, I 'hit the wall'. My energy level dropped to zero, I began having to walk some and I realised I would have to work hard just to finish. I did make it across the line but only with a tremendous headache and hardly enough energy to walk. It was not much fun. I learned an important lesson that year. Stopping for water doesn't actually slow you down. In fact, you will run a better race if you do drink water. The bottom line is that your body is simply not designed to function without water. In the same way, your spiritual stamina depends on stopping for regular drinks of 'spiritual water'. The dilemma for busy believers is finding time to invest in going to the Sacraments and meeting with God in prayer. Like the runner intent on reaching the finish line, we tend to put off those regular drinks of water until we are totally parched. But in the long run, you will run a better race if you will stop for spiritual water. In fact, finishing the Christian race at all may depend on it. And runners who don't ever slow down to take a drink often stumble off the course far short of the finish line. In this year's race, I saw a man become dehydrated just a mile from the finish. Strangely, he didn't seem to recognise that anything was wrong. He was swaying from side to side as he walked, mumbling over and over "I'm fine. I'm fine". He was so disoriented that he didn't even recognise his own sick condition. If you let yourself become spiritually dehydrated, you may not even be able to recognise it. Stop today to drink some cool 'living water'.

JUST FOR A LAUGH …
Once a parishioner brought a suggestion in the parish that they ought to buy a chandelier. He made a passionate plea for it but it was immediately met with strong opposition from other parishioners. The leader of the opposition party stood to say at the parish meeting, "Father, I want to oppose the buying of the chandelier for three reasons - firstly, nobody knows how to spell it so we would never be able to order it. Secondly, if we got it, I don't know anybody who could play it. And, third, what we need here is more light".

SUNDAY TEAS
Tea and coffee will be served after the 10.30am Mass next Sunday in the Parish Centre by Sadie's, Marie's and Phyllis's team.

LETTER FROM POPE FRANCIS
The Vatican released a letter last Monday from Pope Francis directly addressing for the first time the latest accusations of sexual abuse by priests. "The heart-wrenching pain of these victims, which cries out to heaven, was long ignored, kept quiet or silenced" the Pope wrote in his letter addressed to the global Catholic community. A printed copy of the letter is available this weekend at the back of Church. Please make sure you get your copy.

ORGAN RECITAL
Gordon Stewart will playing the Willis Organ at Mauchline Parish Church on Friday 7 September 2018 at 7.00pm. Admission is by a donation in aid of the Organ Renovation Fund.

IN AND AROUND THE CHURCH
Problems with the lights in the Sacristy have been fixed. The repainting of the lampposts in the car park has now been completed with an ingenious device to reach high places. This week, a repair will be made to the Baptismal Font and a piece of the Church carpet will be replaced. Various design improvements will be happening in the foyer of the Parish Centre - have a look! The lettering engraved on the altar in the sanctuary will be renewed in the next couple of weeks. Sincere thanks for all the tremendous support and generosity!

MARY'S MEALS
Saint Peter's Parish collected £643 in the raffle and at least 451 bags of old clothes for Mary's Meals last weekend. Two large vans were necessary. Three bags feed a school child for a whole school year with a meal each day. Saint Peter's has supported food and education for around 150 children. Well done and a big, big thank you!

DATA PROTECTION
Since May, there are new Data Protection Regulations throughout Scotland, which also affect parishes. For example, if you are writing in the Petitions Book at the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, make sure you do not give too much personal information about someone you are praying for. and if you want to add someone's name to the List of the Sick, if you can, please make sure it is okay with them first. Thank you!

GIFT AID
The Inland Revenue now requires us to use a new style of Gift Aid form. These are available at the back of the Church and on the parish website. If you pay tax, please complete the new form and return it to the box provided. This allows us to provide the additional information required on the Gift Aid claim. Gift Aid is a vital source of income. All that is needed is that you pay tax. You simply declare that you give funds to the Church. We do the rest. Why not sign a form today? We get back an extra 25p for every £1 you give the Church in your weekly collection or by way of a donation. There is no need to cancel or renew it. We simply claim in the income we receive.

VISITORS
Are you visiting us for Holy Mass? Please know that you are very welcome. During the 10.30 am Holy Mass outwith holidays, there is a Children’s Liturgy provided for preschool children, children in Primaries 1 to 3 and a Sacramental Programme for children in Primary 4. After the 10.30 am Holy Mass, tea, coffee cakes and buns are available in the Parish Centre. At both of our weekend Holy Masses, we have a second collection for Church maintenance.

ADVERTISER SUPPORT
Our advertisers would welcome your support. We are grateful for their continuing sponsorship. We are grateful for the support of Mr and Mrs Sohal, Nisa Stores, Glasgow Street for the weekly donation of tea, coffee and milk for the Sunday teas.
